A Maison Leroy museum piece — Pommard Les Vignots 1979, forty-six years on. This predates the 1988 founding of Domaine Leroy, so it comes from Lalou Bize-Leroy's négociant era, when she was simultaneously co-running DRC and turning Maison Leroy into the most obsessively selected bottling house in Burgundy. Lalou famously tasted hundreds of barrels blind each year and only released what she considered ready — and her cellars held wines for decades when she felt they needed it. Les Vignots is a cool, high-slope village lieu-dit on the Beaune-facing side of Pommard, and 1979 was a fine, classical vintage in the Côte de Beaune. A bottle that captures a vanished era of Burgundy: when the négociant-éleveur could still produce wines that rivaled the greatest domaines.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Quiet, classic Burgundian fare: roast squab, duck à l'orange, a simple coq au vin, or an aged Époisses. This is a contemplative bottle — let it carry the meal rather than competing with it.

Tasting Profile

Fully tertiary: dried cranberry, forest floor, sous-bois, dried rose, truffle, tea leaf, a whisper of meatiness. Tannins resolved, acidity carrying the wine, finish long and gently fading. Drink soon, slowly.
