Italy by way of the Texas Hill Country. Adrienne Ballou trained at UC Davis and chased harvests from Burgundy to Australia before setting up Lightsome in Stonewall, Texas, where she makes tiny lots in an unabashedly low-intervention style. Her Montepulciano takes a grape best known from Abruzzo and gives it a Texan accent: herbal, spicy, and built to be poured with a slight chill. This is one of the most exciting things happening in Texas wine right now, and it's a genuinely fun, off-the-map red. Adventure in a glass, no passport required.
