Domaine Louis-Claude Desvignes occupies an 18th-century house in Villié-Morgon with a vaulted cellar dug into the pink granite hillside. The family has grown Gamay here for eight generations. Louis-Claude's son Claude-Emmanuelle now manages the estate's 14 hectares, all farmed organically and certified since 2019. Château Gaillard is a lieu-dit in the heart of Morgon adjacent to the famous Côte du Py, planted on decomposed schist and granite soils that give wines of notable structure and minerality. Whole-cluster fermented with semi-carbonic maceration, aged in older foudres. The 2024 shows the purity of a cooler vintage—violet and red cherry aromatics, silky tannins, and that distinctive Morgon earthiness on the finish. A benchmark Beaujolais from one of the region's most respected families. Serve slightly cool with terrines, roasted chicken, or mushroom dishes.

"The 2024 Morgon Château-Gaillard is sourced from vines planted in 1920 and 1952 on sandy-granite soils close to Fleurie. This has an expressive bouquet with perfumed violet scents filtering through the mixture of red and blue fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, displaying fine structure and good length, albeit without the precision that I found in the 2023." —Neal Martin

More about Louis-Claude Desvignes

Louis-Claude Desvignes embodied Beaujolais' spirit: picking later than his neighbors, working with semi-carbonic fermentation, making wines that age like Pinot Noir. His children now run the eighth-generation domaine, continuing his legacy with organic farming and the same proven methods.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

100% Gamay. Château Gaillard is a lieu-dit in the NE corner of Morgon in the climat of Douby, along the Fleurie border. Desvignes used to include this 1.03-hectare plot of 80-year-old, south-facing vines in their entry-level "La Voûte Saint-Vincent", but its strong old-vine character warranted its separation starting in 2020. The vines are planted on sandy granite soils, are certified-organic and harvested by hand. The bunches are mainly left whole, with about 10% destemming, and placed into closed concrete vats for a partly carbonic fermentation; maceration is about 10 days with a submerged cap and no punchdowns. A very small amount of sulfur is added after malo (and sometimes at bottling). The wine is aged in cement tank for 7 months in 30-hectoliter concrete eggs and bottled with a light, non-sterile filtration.
