A single-cru Barolo from Einaudi's historic Terlo holding, in the heart of its window. Vigna Costa Grimaldi sits in the Terlo cru of Barolo village — a calcareous-marl parcel that Luigi Einaudi himself purchased in 1958, planted to the estate's oldest Nebbiolo vines. Terlo is a quieter name among Barolo's great crus, but the wine is one of Einaudi's flagships: structured, tannic, and built for the long haul. The 2009 vintage was warm and generous, and at sixteen years on, this is settling into its drinking window — ripe red and dark cherry, licorice, tobacco, and the cru's signature spiced finish. Tannins are firm but ripe, the wine still has years of cellar life ahead, and it shows beautifully now with patient air.

Antonio Galloni

"Bright medium red. Deeply pitched, liqueur-like perfume of ripe cherry, rose petal and spicy oak. The sweetest and densest of these 2009 Barolos, with more mid-palate material to support the tooth-coating tannins. Rich for a wine from sandy soil (the Cannubi is much more a calcaire wine), and nicely sweet on the firmly structured finish." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

"The 2009 Barolo Costa Grimaldi is painted with broader brush strokes. It delivers immediate tones of black fruit, spice and nutmeg. Give it time in the glass and a background chorus of cola, tar, licorice and brimstone slowly increase in volume and tone. The mouthfeel is forceful, but finessed, with bright acidity and integrated tannins. Despite the warm vintage, the wine is beautifully crafted and will withstand the years." —Monica Larner

Kerin O'Keefe

"A fragrant Barolo, showing intense rose and violet aromas with undertones of red fruits and spice. The palate delivers dense dark cherry, white pepper and mint flavors, with a hint of vanilla. It's long and linear but still young, with aggressive tannins that need time to mellow." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Luigi Einaudi

Founded by Italy's future president in 1897, Luigi Einaudi makes Barolo from the Costa Grimaldi vineyard at Terlo—a southeast-facing, calcareous-marl site with reserved nose, full-bodied attack, and silky tannins that evolve for decades. This is Piedmont's aristocracy.

Grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, mushroom risotto, or wild boar ragù over pappardelle. Aged Parmigiano or hard pecorino to close. White truffle in season is heaven.
