The grand seigneur of Hermitage white. De l'Orée is one of three single-parcel "Sélection Parcellaire" whites Chapoutier makes from Hermitage hill — sourced from 60-70 year old Marsanne vines in the Les Murets lieu-dit, where ancient fluvioglacial alluvium yields wines of staggering density and longevity. 100% Marsanne, vinified half in 600-liter wooden barrels with regular bâtonnage and half in tank, raised on lees for nearly a year. The 2011 is a solid Northern Rhône vintage now fourteen years in — the wine has shed its youthful primary fruit and entered a glorious mid-life of flower oil, buttered citrus, dried pineapple, beeswax, and powdered rock. Acidity remains vibrant, texture is silken, and the finish goes on forever. Drink now or hold for decades; this is the kind of white Hermitage that ages on a Riesling-like timeline.

"Bright gold. Nectarine, poached pear and honey on the deeply scented nose, with complicating floral and mineral qualities adding lift. Broad, densely packed and fleshy but sharply focused too, offering potent, smoke-tinged orchard and pit fruit flavors and a bitter note of citrus pith. Dry and nervy on the long, incisive finish, which features sexy honeysuckle and spice notes."

"Even better and always one of the top whites in any given vintage, the 2011 Ermitage Cuvee de l’Oree (first produced in 1991) comes from 80+-year-old Marsanne vines planted in the Les Murets lieu-dit. Gorgeously full-bodied and impeccably put together on the palate, with awesome texture and richness that’s framed by vibrant acidity, it boasts off the hook aromas and flavors of flower oil, buttered citrus, dried pineapple and powdered rock. It will be even better in another year, and age pretty much forever. As I’ve said before though, there is no harm in drinking these beauties in their youth." —Jeb Dunnuck

"The Jonagold apple, pear, persimmon and lemon curd notes glide along, carried by hints of brioche and macadamia nut before giving way to a lightly toasted almond edge on the finish. Still shows a hint of raw youth, so let this settle in the cellar."

More about M. Chapoutier

Michel Chapoutier took over this 1879-founded Rhône legend in 1988 and immediately pushed toward quality. Now, all their vineyards are managed biodynamically, and they famously add Braille to every label since 1996. Known for their single-varietal approach and distinctive red and white Hermitages—wines that taste like the North Rhône distilled.
