Xinomavro from a place almost nobody associates with Xinomavro: Siatista, in Western Macedonia, a town with a long winemaking past and, until recently, very little present. Dimitris Diamantis is the reason that's changing — his grandfather hand-grafted the family's Magoutes vineyard at the start of the 20th century, and in the 1990s Dimitris rescued enough genetic material from the few surviving old plots to replant 18 hectares on limestone and clay slopes between 750 and 890 meters in the foothills of the Askio range. That altitude is the whole point: it gives Greece's noblest red grape, the one everyone compares to Nebbiolo, a high-elevation, mineral-driven frame. Diamantis and his partner George Papageorgiou are now pushing to have Siatista's 200 hectares — about the size of Condrieu — recognized as Greece's fifth Xinomavro appellation, after Naoussa, Rapsani, Goumenissa and Amyndeon. Farming is organic. For anyone who already loves Nebbiolo and hasn't yet found the Greek version at anything like this quality-to-price ratio, start here.

Tasting Profile
