Timorasso was down to a handful of rows in the 1980s before a small group of Colli Tortonesi growers brought it back, and Mandirola holds the oldest known plantings of the grape in the zone — the vines that supplied the original selections. This is the estate's classic Derthona bottling, named for the Roman-era name of nearby Tortona, grown on clay over grey limestone at around 300 meters in the Apennine foothills at Casasco. Enrico Mandirola's great-grandfather bought the farm in 1913, back when it grew grain and corn alongside vines; the family now works 11 hectares under sustainable certification. Vinification happens in the old cement tanks of the historic cellar, with no fining agents and filtration kept to a minimum. Timorasso rewards patience — it drinks well young but genuinely gains texture and depth over five to ten years in bottle.
