Catarratto is Sicily's most-planted grape and mostly gets treated as filler; De Bartoli treats it as a serious white. "Lucido" is the name of the sub-variety used here — the glossy-skinned, fresher and more delicate strain of Catarratto — and the fruit comes from organically farmed 20-year-old vines on sandy loam near Alcamo, east of the family's Marsala home base. Marco De Bartoli built this estate in Contrada Samperi in 1978 on the conviction that western Sicily could make wines of real seriousness, and his children Renato, Sebastiano and Giuseppina have kept that going since his death in 2011. Whole clusters are gently pressed, the must settles 48 hours, fermentation is spontaneous in stainless steel, and the wine spends seven months in tank before bottling without filtration. Broader and more textured than the estate's Grillo bottlings, and a genuinely rewarding white.

More about Marco de Bartoli

Marco de Bartoli was once a professional race car driver before obsession with wine pulled him back to his family's Marsala farm in 1978. Now his three children work beside him, reviving native Sicilian grapes and restoring the good name of Marsala through fortified wines and dry whites. Vecchio Samperi is the wine that matters here—a career in a bottle.
