An Italian rosé that happens to be Californian: Martha Stoumen fell for Nero d'Avola while working at COS in Sicily's Vittoria, and this is the wine where that obsession pays off, blended with Vermentino for lift. The fruit comes from dry-farmed Mendocino vineyards — head-trained Nero d'Avola at Bricarelli Ranch in Ukiah and certified-organic Venturi in Calpella — with farming that leans on compost and predatory insects rather than sprays. The Nero d'Avola is foot-tread whole-cluster and left overnight on its skins before pressing, then fermented and aged on fine lees in neutral vessels, while the Vermentino ferments separately in steel; native yeasts throughout, bone dry, and a modest 12% alcohol. Stoumen calls herself a "small fish in a big pond," making around 8,000 cases a year against the millions California's big houses churn out. Chill it hard and pour it generously.
