The most bracing red Burgundy vintage of its era, from the grower many considered the master of Savigny. Maurice Ecard's reputation rested on Les Serpentieres, a 12-hectare premier cru on the Pernand side of the Rhoin valley facing south at 260 to 270 meters on sandy, marl-rich brown soils, a site that gives perfume and lift rather than weight. In 1996 a relentless north wind blew through the ripening season, concentrating the fruit while locking in extraordinarily high acidity, and the wines have stayed taut and firm ever since. At thirty years old this has resolved into a mature, savory Burgundy that still finishes with real cut, which makes it a far better match for food than for sipping. Sourced from a private cellar rather than the domaine; decant off the sediment.

"Ecard recently acquired another hectare of Savigny-Les-Beaune Les Serpentieres from a family member, bringing the estate's total acreage in this vineyard to four hectares. It is bright ruby-colored and offers aromas of sweet red cherries. Gorgeous and sumptuous layers of succulent red fruits can be found in this medium-to-full-bodied, velvety, delineated and broad wine. It has the structure for aging, but who will be able to keep their hands off this beauty? Anticipated maturity: 1999-2005. Maurice Ecard, the owner and highly-talented winemaker of this estate, bottled (fined but unfiltered) all his 1996s in September, 1997, just barely 12 months after the harvest. He describes the vintage as "supple and aromatic, perfect to drink while waiting for the 1995s."" —Pierre Rovani
