Miani is one of Italy's true cult addresses, an allocation-only estate where Enzo Pontoni farms tiny plots by hand and bottles fewer than 700 cases in a strong year. This is his classic Chardonnay, the house expression rather than a named single vineyard, grown on the marl-and-sandstone ponca soils of Colli Orientali del Friuli. Even in its more approachable form, the low yields and obsessive farming show up as concentration and drive. Here it comes in magnum, the format collectors chase for slower, more graceful aging. A serious white from a grower who simply won't compromise.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2023 Chardonnay is airy and fresh, with a pretty lime hue and hints of green melon elevated by sweet herbs and spice. Lively and spry, it shows notable minerality and a candied citrus tinge up front that elevates its tart orchard fruits. This finishes with excellent length and a twang of candied lemon enriched by almond custard." —Eric Guido

More about Miani

Enzo Pontoni founded Miani in 1985 and capped production at fewer than 700 cases per year. His Sauvignon Blancs command a cult following—rare, expensive, impossible to find. The soil is ponca: layers of calcareous clay and sandstone. The approach is obsessive. This is what happens when a grower refuses to compromise or scale up.

Perfect Pairings

Roast poultry, pork loin, seafood pasta, or a board of nutty aged cheeses for the table.

Tasting Profile

Dry, concentrated white with orchard and citrus fruit and a stony, mineral core. Textured and built to last, especially in magnum.
