Enzo Pontoni farms fewer than 700 cases across all of Miani in a good year, which is why these bottles vanish the moment they land. Baracca is one of his single-vineyard Chardonnays, drawn from vines over 60 years old rooted in Friuli's ancient ponca marl. Yields here are punishingly low, and the result is a white of uncommon depth and layered power that still reads as bright and nuanced rather than heavy. This is Chardonnay treated the way great white Burgundy is treated: as an expression of one patch of dirt, farmed obsessively by a grower who refuses to scale up. "The 2022 Chardonnay Baracca is more savory than sweet, mixing inflections of hazelnut and flint stone with white peach. It is soothingly round and silken in feel, with ripe pit fruits and a cascade of confectionery spice complemented by sweet inner floral tones over a tactile crunch of minerality. Zesty acidity adds lively tension as the 2022 tapers off long and crisp, leaving hints of sour melon that keep the senses salivating for more. Enzo Pontoni founded Miani in 1985 and capped production at fewer than 700 cases per year. His Sauvignon Blancs command a cult following—rare, expensive, impossible to find. The soil is ponca: layers of calcareous clay and sandstone. The approach is obsessive. This is what happens when a grower refuses to compromise or scale up.
