This is one of the rarest wines Enzo Pontoni makes, and Miani is already one of Italy's most allocation-only estates. The grape is Malvasia Istriana, a distinctly Adriatic variety, grown in the La Mont di Zuc vineyard that rises out of ponca and stone in Buttrio. The fruit is pressed slowly, then fermented and aged at least a year in French oak, giving a white with the texture and seriousness Miani is known for. This magnum only sharpens the appeal: the larger format ages more slowly and gracefully, and fewer than 700 cases leave the estate in a good year across all bottlings. A true collector's bottle.

"The 2022 Malvasia La Mont di Zuc is decidedly savory in style as lime zest and green melon give way to rosemary and flint stone. Elegant and nearly weighty in feel, it presents a glycerol wave of mineral-infused pit fruits that flow across the palate while a twang of vibrant acidity adds cheek-pinching tension. Despite its sheer size and opulence, the 2022 finishes incredibly fresh and clean, leaving a steely sensation and a hint of confectionary spice." —Eric Guido

"Miani’s 2022 Friuli Colli Orientali Malvasia La Mont di Zuc is a delightful white that captures the warmth of the vintage in a creamy, expressive style marked by ripe apricot, baked apple and yellow rose. Malvasia often carries a floral edge, and though that character is subdued here, it still lends lift and brightness to this medium-bodied wine. Grown in the hilly Colli Orientali zone of Friuli, where cool Alpine influences temper the ripening season, the wine also shows pretty mineral tones and a slightly reductive character from lees aging that add dimension and a taut sense of tension." —Monica Larner

More about Miani

Enzo Pontoni founded Miani in 1985 and capped production at fewer than 700 cases per year. His Sauvignon Blancs command a cult following—rare, expensive, impossible to find. The soil is ponca: layers of calcareous clay and sandstone. The approach is obsessive. This is what happens when a grower refuses to compromise or scale up.

Dry, aromatic white with white flowers, orchard fruit, and a saline, stony finish. Textured and layered, and slower-aging in magnum.
