Mitja Sirk grew up in the cellar of Josko Gravner, who handed him grapes and an amphora when he was eleven. He could have inherited the family's Michelin-starred agriturismo in Cormons; instead he chased precision through apprenticeships at Dujac, Conterno and Roulot, then walked away from Friuli's fashionable orange-wine playbook entirely. Meden is his brand-new single-vineyard Friulano, 60-year-old vines rooted in fractured ponca marl a mile from the Slovenian border. Cool eastern exposure and a gentle, Burgundy-learned press make this the most delicate, floral wine he makes. Native-yeast ferment, a year on fine lees, barely any sulfur, zero artifice.

"Savory at first, the 2023 Friulano Meden wafts up with an array of flinty crushed stones, rosemary and apricots complemented by a twang of citrusy spice. It hovers across the palate with lifted textures and mineral-laced pit fruits, coming across as finessed and ethereal. Its minerality comes through in spades, long and nearly salty in feel, with hints of green melon that fade slowly. Amazingly, the Friulano Meden finishes at just 11.5% abv, making it a total pleasure on the palate." —Eric Guido
