Ian Naude works almost exclusively with old Cape bush vines, and Werfdans is his old-vine Cinsault from Darling, on the cool Atlantic side of the Western Cape. The fruit comes from vines planted in the late 1970s, vinified with almost no intervention beyond a touch of sulfur, then patiently held back: 2017 was only released six years after vintage, and arrives now at eight years on, fully in stride. It's everything great Cape Cinsault should be: pressed violets, wild strawberry, sour cherry, Turkish delight, and crushed granite, with a translucent palate that hides serious density and a 20-year horizon. Drink it cool with a good meal and don't waste any.

"The 2017 Cinsault Werfdans is picked early and represents a combination of whole bunches, around 30%, and de-stemmed bunches, Naudé working the stems back into the wine, with one pump-over a day. It is matured in used in 225-liter barrels for 12 to 15 months with hardly any malo. It has a crystalline bouquet with perfumed red cherries, crushed strawberry and wilted rose petal scents blossoming in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry, fine weight for a Cinsault, and slightly darker fruit mixed with bay leaf and a hint of white pepper on the understated and elegant finish. Seek this out." —Neal Martin

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A cool-served partner for roast duck, grilled lamb chops with herbs, or pan-seared salmon. Also lovely with charcuterie, mushroom risotto, North African tagines, or sticky char siu pork.

Tasting Profile

Translucent ruby. Pressed violets, wild strawberry, sour cherry, sun-dried cranberry, rose petal, and Turkish delight over crushed granite minerality. Light-bodied but tightly packed; fine-grained tannins, lifted acidity, and a long perfumed finish.
