Olivier Merlin is one of the finest winemakers in the Macon — his wines are benchmarks for the region — and yet he still flies somewhat under the radar, which keeps the prices honest. This 2016 from La Roche-Vineuse is a mature white Burgundy now hitting a lovely stride, with the extra layers that come from a decade in bottle. Expect rich orchard fruit gone slightly honeyed, toasted nuts, and a deep mineral cut that keeps it fresh. This is in a beautiful drinking window right now — don't wait too much longer.

"The 2016 Mâcon La Roche Vineuse is the debut vintage for Merlin, matured entirely in stainless steel. It has a precise but very appealing bouquet with scents of orange blossom and apricot gently blossoming in the glass. It doesn’t want to make a fuss, but it does want to please. The palate is taut on the entry, quite malic and nicely focused, with touches of toffee apple towards the finish that just need to express more mineral tension. Not bad, but I wager there is better to come. Tasted at Field, Morris & Verdin’s annual tasting in London." —Neal Martin

"The 2016 Mâcon-La Roche-Vineuse Vieilles Vignes offers up aromas of fresh peach, nutmeg and white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and satiny, with a generous, open-knit profile. It's not as deep and dense as the 2015 version, but it's more charming." —William Kelley

"Complex, exhibiting saline and mineral elements, along with white peach, apple and spice flavors. Beautifully balanced and focused, remaining intense and long on the juicy finish. Drink now through 2024."

More about Olivier Merlin

Magical Mâcon from the plainest terroir. Olivier and Corinne started in 1987 renting 4.5 hectares, now they're recognized as the Mâconnais' reference point. Their secret: seriousness. They vinify entirely in tank to preserve purity, extract from old vines (60 years average), and prove that 'lowly' Mâcon can rival Côte d'Or wines. Blind-tasters often guess Meursault; the reality is even better value.
