From Barolo's single most historic vineyard, made by one of the region's celebrated innovators, in one of the great classical vintages of the modern era. Cannubi sits in the heart of Barolo commune and is widely considered the appellation's most famous cru, prized for wines of elegance, balance and perfume. Paolo Scavino first vinified Cannubi in 1985 and the family's parcel held some of their oldest vines, planted in 1946 - the raw material for one of their most refined single-vineyard Barolos. 2001 was a balanced, structured year that has aged on its own generous schedule, and this back-vintage bottle from a private collection now shows the dried-rose, tar and truffle complexity that mature Nebbiolo from a great site develops over decades. Stand it upright for a day or two and decant it well ahead; it's drinking in a beautiful window.

"The 2001 Barolo Cannubi, a dark ruby, is a classic in the making. It offers a multi-dimensional, delicate nose of flowers, menthol and minerals with plenty of ripe dark cherry fruit, great length and a nuanced, ethereal finish. It will require at least a few years of bottle age and will still be vibrant and full of flavor at age 20. Compared to Scavino's more imposing Barolos Carobric and Bric del Fiasc the Cannubi can sometimes be overpowered, but given some cellaring it typically begins to strut its stuff around age 10 and develops into a magical Barolo that can challenge many of the region's top wines. I still have fond memories of the sublime 1989 and 1990 tasted last year. A great effort." —Antonio Galloni

"Loads of fascinating aromas--plums, dried flowers and berries--follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Caressing and refined. Another wonderful Cannubi from Scavino."

More about Paolo Scavino

Paolo Scavino founded his winery in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo. Now Enrico runs it with his daughters—the fourth generation—working 23 hectares across 19 different Barolo crus, touching all but three communes. The house style is elegant, polished, serious. Bric Dël Fiasc (both standard and Riserva), Cannubi, Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata: these are Barolos that reward patience. A century of learning how to make red wine the right way.
