The very first vintage of Scavino's boldest idea: a Barolo blended from three great crus rather than bottled from one. Carobric takes its name from the sites it draws on - CAnnubi in Barolo village, ROcche di Castiglione, and BRIC del Fiasc, the family's signature Castiglione Falletto parcel - and 1996 was the inaugural year. Each cru is fermented and aged separately, passing through French oak and then large casks before the blend is assembled, the goal being to marry Cannubi's perfume, Rocche's depth and Fiasco's power in one glass. 1996 was a cool, late, structurally imposing Barolo vintage built for exactly this kind of wait, and thirty years on the wine has traded its youthful grip for tar, dried rose, truffle and leather. Scavino made Carobric through 2018, when the family's Cannubi fruit came to an end, so this is the opening chapter of a book now closed. From a private cellar; stand it upright, then decant well ahead.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"1996 which was the first vintage Scavino produced this wine. Carobric is made from a blend of fruit sourced from the Rocche di Castiglione, Cannubi and Bric del Fiasc vineyards. Scavino’s 1996 Barolo Carobric, tasted from magnum, displays notable vibrancy and freshness in both its aromas and flavors, with layers of sweet dark fruit, minerals and earthiness that are just starting to show some tertiary nuances. It offers notable length, lively acidity and plenty of fruit to drink well for at least another decade." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

"Beautifully crafted, with wonderful aromas of roasted meat, chestnuts, berries and cedar. Full-bodied, round, extremely polished. Long, flavorful finish."

More about Paolo Scavino

Paolo Scavino founded his winery in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo. Now Enrico runs it with his daughters—the fourth generation—working 23 hectares across 19 different Barolo crus, touching all but three communes. The house style is elegant, polished, serious. Bric Dël Fiasc (both standard and Riserva), Cannubi, Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata: these are Barolos that reward patience. A century of learning how to make red wine the right way.

Tasting Profile

Mature Nebbiolo: dried rose, tar, truffle, dried cherry and leather. Full-bodied in frame but fully resolved, with fine, softened tannins and the bright acidity of a cool vintage. Long, savory, faintly balsamic finish.
