An important new voice in grower Champagne, and this 2020 is a fabulous follow-up to the breakout 2019. Pauline Collin comes from a long line of growers in the high-elevation village of Ludes; after stints at Krug and Ruinart and alongside her husband Raphael Bereche, she began reclaiming her family's finest old-vine parcels to farm, vinify, and bottle herself under the credo of one wine, one terroir, one vintage. This Ludes 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes is drawn from just two hectares of old vines: a blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and a touch of Petit Meslier, that last grape lending aromatic lift, spice, and a bracing edge. Classic, poised, and finely nuanced, with textural presence and a long, vibrant finish. Quantities are very limited.

"The 2020 Extra Brut Ludes Vieilles Vignes is a fabulous follow up to the 2019. A blend of 70% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 5% Petit Meslier, the 2020 is sourced from selection of just two hectares of old vines. This opens beautifully on the palate with gorgeous textural presence from the Pinot Noir. White pepper, mint and chalk overtones from the Petit Meslier lift the long, vibrant finish. The 2020 is still recovering from its recent disgorgement about a month before this tasting, but it is incredibly promising." —Antonio Galloni

More about Pauline Collin Bereche

Precision and depth from Ludes chalk. Pauline started her own Champagne house in 2016, working old vines in the Montagne de Reims (Ludes, Ambonnay, Verzy, and others). Her signature is balance: strong acidity matched with profound ripeness, chalk-driven precision without severity. The inclusion of Petit Meslier lends firmness and a complex, unusual character. A new-generation voice with something to say.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
