Pickers on Schonfels clip themselves by carabiner to a tractor parked at the top of the vineyard — the slope ends in a rock face that drops a few hundred feet to the road below. That's the price of admission for one of the Saar's great sites, a cliff planted with ungrafted vines around 110 years old, dating to the era when Saar wines were the most expensive in the world. Florian Lauer's father let it go fallow in the 1980s because it was too expensive, too difficult and too dangerous to farm; Florian brought it back, and it now yields one of his three dry Grosses Gewachs bottlings alongside Feils and Kupp (the GG on the label marks a dry Grand Cru). Schonfels is the most structured and mineral of the estate's dry wines and normally demands bottle age or a long decant, but 2021 was unusual: a vintage the trade wrote off as a Kabinett year that in fact delivered outstanding dry Rieslings, with ripeness levels barely off the warmer 2019 and 2020 and Lauer's dry wines already showing well on release while keeping the acid and structure to age. Four years on, this is close to the sweet spot — still worth a decant if you're opening it tonight.

More about Peter Lauer

The Saar's excellent, affordable rising star. Florian Lauer (fifth generation, admitted to the VDP in 2013) has made his family estate a reference point for serious German Riesling at prices that don't require a second mortgage. They farm organically, ferment native yeast, employ no fining agents, and release wines—especially the incredible value Barrel entries—that prove great terroir transcends pretension.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with lemon and thyme, Dover sole meunière, seared scallops with brown butter, pork schnitzel, smoked trout with horseradish cream, or a mature Comté.

Tasting Profile

Taut, with citrus zest, green apple and yellow plum over a strong wet-stone, smoky slate character. Medium-bodied but built on structure rather than weight, with high, racy acidity and a salty, chalky finish that goes long. Tightly wound — decant it or give it a few years.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
