Philip Lardot, Pinot Noir, 2024

This is Mosel Pinot Noir at 11.5% alcohol, grown on decomposed grey slate. It shows what red wine tastes like when it comes from Mosel Riesling country instead of from limestone. The fruit comes from two steep sites, Pündericher Goldlay and Bullayer Brautrock, where the vines are 12 and 25 years old and face west and south. In 2024 Philip Lardot fermented half the grapes as whole clusters and destemmed the other half by hand. He pressed after two weeks on the skins, aged the wine 18 months in barrique and bottled it unfiltered as plain Landwein der Mosel, which tells you he cares more about what's in the glass than about the category on the label. Lardot took a roundabout route to get here. He was born in Finland and grew up in Amsterdam, then worked for a natural wine importer in Copenhagen and did a harvest in Burgundy before landing at Clemens Busch in the Mosel and never leaving. He and his wife, Rosalie Curtin, farm five hectares on steep Mosel slopes without herbicides or fertilizers. Many of their vines are in historic sites that are being abandoned because they can't keep up with industrial winegrowing. If you like your Pinot light on its feet and more savory than sweet-fruited, this is one to try.

More about Philip Lardot

Philip Lardot was born in Finland, grew up in Amsterdam, moved to Copenhagen to work for a natural wine importer, then went to Burgundy for a harvest before landing in Clemens Busch's vineyard in Moselle. He never left. With wife Rosalie Curtin, he farms five hectares on Moselle's steep slopes as a natural wine producer. The project is small, serious, and built on a path that wandered across Europe before finding its true home in German terroir.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with five-spice or cherry sauce; mushroom and thyme tart; Flammkuchen with onion and bacon; pan-roasted trout with brown butter; pork schnitzel with lingonberries; lentils braised with smoked sausage. Serve slightly cool.

Tasting Profile

Smells of fresh-picked blackberry and cherry bark, with warm spice notes of cinnamon, Darjeeling tea and a hint of saffron. It's light-bodied at 11.5% alcohol, with a fresh, lean frame that leans savory rather than sweet. The finish is spicy and tea-like.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
