Éclat de Calcaire means explosion of limestone, and the 2024 earns the name: finely etched reduction, crunchy citrus and orchard fruit, and a chalky drive straight down the middle. It is bottled as plain Vin de France, but the fruit comes primarily from old-vine parcels in Meursault, with additional fruit from Volnay and Pommard. Pierre Girardin is the 13th generation of his family to farm in Burgundy; his father Vincent sold the family domaine in 2011 but held back 4.5 hectares, which became Domaine Pierre Girardin in 2017, when Pierre was 21. Fermentation is spontaneous and the wine is raised in large barrels, about 30% new — a format he favors for preserving cut and site transparency without heavy oak influence. 2024 was a tiny, punishing vintage in Burgundy, hit by spring frost and relentless mildew, but the whites that came through are the most classically proportioned in years. This is his entry-level wine, and it routinely rivals village bottlings.
