Chasselas from the Northern Rhone, made by the greatest name in Saint-Joseph — that sentence shouldn't exist, and yet here it is. The grape is a Swiss and Savoyard specialty almost nobody bothers with in the Rhone, but the Gonon brothers hold a sliver of a parcel of vines planted in 1890 on gneiss in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, ground that once belonged to the legendary Raymond Trollat. The parcel is barely a tenth of a hectare, so this has never been anything but a trickle. It's farmed the way everything at Gonon is: entirely by hand, vines trained on single echalas stakes, organic since 2004, no herbicides or synthetic fertilizers, because the slopes are too steep and the rows too narrow for a machine to help. What comes out is a light, floral, low-key white with far more energy and mineral bite than Chasselas usually manages — a curiosity in the best sense, and about as close as most of us will get to a Gonon bottle that isn't spoken for.

Perfect Pairings

Raclette or a bubbling Savoyard tartiflette, fondue, saucisson and cornichons, trout amandine, goat cheese from the Ardeche, or a plate of oysters.

Tasting Profile

Dry and light-bodied, with aromas of white flowers, pear skin and crushed stone. Delicate rather than showy, with bright acidity, a faintly chalky, earthy texture and a clean, minerally finish. Easy to drink, but not simple.
