Benchmark Saint-Joseph from one of the Northern Rhône's most beloved family domaines, and the bottle in this run to open tonight. Pierre and Jean Gonon farm steep, granite slopes in Mauves, the historic heart of the appellation directly across from the Hermitage hill, with which they share the same granitic bedrock. They farm organically (no chemicals since 2004; later certified), harvest by hand, and ferment whole-ish clusters with native yeasts in the traditional way, producing Syrah of remarkable purity and finesse rather than brute power. 2011 began warm and early and then turned cool and damp, so the wines came in mid-weight and red-fruited, built on site rather than ripeness — the approachable vintage of its decade. At fifteen years the 2011 is fully mature: dried cherry, olive and pepper, with the tannins long since resolved. From a private cellar, and ready now rather than a candidate for further keeping.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2011 Saint-Joseph is delicious. Dried red and black fruits emerge from the glass, complemented by leathery shadings, crushed violets, cured meat, forest floor and tobacco. Offering moderate flavor concentration within a medium-bodies frame, the 2011 has evolved beautifully. Totally seamless and so original, the 2011 might not have the structure and density of the 2010, but it delights nonetheless. It should continue to provide pleasure for at least another five years." —Nicolas Greinacher

Robert Parker

"Similar to the sexy, open-knit and ready to go 2012, the 2011 St Joseph shows the sunny nature of the vintage with its awesome perfume of sweet black raspberries, incense, dried violets and wild herbs. Layered, ripe, medium to full-bodied and downright seamless, it's drinking brilliantly today but will keep for another decade." —Jeb Dunnuck

Wine Spectator

"This red features a fleshy feel, with plum skin, blackberry coulis and loganberry notes bouncing off one another while dark licorice and fruitcake accents line the finish. Shows depth and weight, but remains stylish."
