Benchmark Saint-Joseph from one of the Northern Rhône's most beloved family domaines, in the vintage classicists prize above all others in its decade. Pierre and Jean Gonon farm steep, granite slopes in Mauves, the historic heart of the appellation directly across from the Hermitage hill, with which they share the same granitic bedrock. They farm organically (no chemicals since 2004; later certified), harvest by hand, and ferment whole-ish clusters with native yeasts in the traditional way, producing Syrah of remarkable purity and finesse rather than brute power. After a cool, wet spring, 2016 turned warm and dry and ripened slowly and evenly into a late harvest, giving transparent, medium-weight wines with fine tannins and lift — the foil to 2015's power. At ten years the 2016 is arriving right on schedule, still fruited but with the smoky, olive-tinged Saint-Joseph notes stepping forward, and it has a long stretch ahead of it. From a private cellar; the best all-round choice here if you want one bottle for the table and one for the cellar.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Saint-Joseph is delicious, wafting from the glass with refined tobacco, iodine, earthy tones and dried flowers. Showing masterful equilibrium on the medium- to full-bodied palate alongside commendable savoriness, the 2016 is fully developed, settling the expression with effortless vivacity and thrust on the highly complex epilogue. This is classic Gonon at its finest." —Nicolas Greinacher

Robert Parker

"The 2016 Saint-Joseph from Pierre Gonon has gained power and depth since I last tasted it. Revealing a delicate, perfumed bouquet of dark cherries, black olives, tapenade and violet, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and precise, with a seamless texture and a fleshy core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, culminating in a long, energetic finish." —Yohan Castaing

Jancis Robinson

"Superb, exotic nose with stemmy, meaty and smoky complexity. What a beauty! A cross between the charm of Côte Rôtie with the structure of Cornas. Still very primary, yet the tannins are digestible now."

Decanter

"Only 10% of grapes for this wine were destemmed. It has fresh, sylvan aromas, and is lush in texture with a searching, herbal finish. There is inky concentration to the fruit, while fibrous tannins coat the mouth to give considerable texture and relief. It's wild, almost rustic, and buzzes with life."
