Grand Cru Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the Cote des Blancs village behind Salon and Krug's Clos du Mesnil, at a price that has nothing to do with those names. Pierre Moncuit is a purist house: nearly everything they bottle is a single-vintage, single-village snapshot, and the Delos is no exception: it carries no vintage on the label but is drawn from a single harvest. It is named for founders Pierre Moncuit and his wife Odile Moncuit-Delos, who began bottling under their own name in the late 1920s; the family has grown vines at Le Mesnil since 1889. Nicole Moncuit has farmed the vineyards and made the wine since 1977, with her brother Yves running the business and her daughter Valerie now working in the cellar. Most of the vines are over fifty years old and two parcels are pushing a hundred, which is rare in a region that tends to replant before thirty. This bottling is built on the 2019 base and finished as a brut, with just enough dosage to round the edges without covering up the chalk. Chiseled, saline Mesnil Chardonnay from a grower who never made a fuss about it.
