Old-vine Grenache and nothing else, from one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's great drought vintages, now twenty-one years on from harvest. The name nods to Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio, the two brothers who took over the family domaine in 1999 and made the first bottling of this cuvée with the 2000 vintage; it is drawn from the estate's oldest Grenache in parcels including La Crau, La Guigasse and La Serre, on sand and rolled galets, and raised in a mix of demi-muids and smaller barrels. July and August 2005 brought barely 12.5mm of rain, the driest the appellation had recorded in a century, with hot days, cool nights and steady Mistral giving deeply colored, firmly structured wines made to go the distance. This bottle comes from a private cellar, and at twenty-one years it has traded jammy youth for dried fruit, garrigue and leather while keeping the sheer scale that made the vintage famous. Mature and at the generous end of its window: decant it, and drink over the next few years.

Antonio Galloni

"Inky ruby. Smoky raspberry and creme de cassis aromas, with a surreal array of spice, floral and mineral qualities building in the glass. Palate-saturating red berry preserve flavors show a liqueur-like sweetness and viscosity but also remarkable mineral lift, finishing broad, sappy and with amazing persistence. One of my favorite wines of the vintage. "This is a selection; it's not from a particular plot," Thierry Usseglio told me." —Josh Raynolds

"Lastly, the 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres is a more blockbuster-styled effort that has overflowing notes of black fruits, licorice, roasted meats, truffle and peppery herbs. Made from 100% Grenache that saw time in 1-, 2-, and 3-year-old small barrels and demi-muid, it’s full-bodied, gorgeously concentrated and ripe, with big underlying structure. Just now at the early stages of maturity, it too will have 20-25 years of overall longevity." —Jeb Dunnuck

Wine Spectator

"Formidably dense and structured, with lots of fig paste and currant confiture, layered with espresso, bittersweet cocoa, bramble and hoisin sauce notes. The long, tarry finish really pounds it out authoritatively, with fruit and minerality to burn. Has the power of the previous vintages, but with far better definition."
