Cooperative Barbaresco at its most authoritative. Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, brings together 50-plus growers and bottles nine single-cru Riservas in the best vintages, each aged a minimum of 30 months in large Slavonian oak before release. Montefico sits south- and southeast-facing at 230-260 meters between Ovello and the more famous Montestefano, on calcareous-limestone soils that translate into firmly structured, mineral-driven Barbaresco with a snap of austerity. The 2008 vintage was a solid classical year for the zone. Seventeen years on, this Riserva is just entering its drinking window: the tannins are loosening, the fruit deepening, the savory minerality emerging. Hold a few more years or pour it with patience and a carafe.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Bright, full red. Inviting aromas of redcurrant and orange zest complicated by subtle truffle and earth notes. Round, rich, ripe and full, with lovely chewy sweetness to its soil-driven red fruit flavors. Not yet as delineated as the nose suggests but dense and consistent from start to finish, with no shortage of energy for aging. Broad, fine-grained tannins build nicely on the rising aftertaste." —Stephen Tanzer

Decanter

"Vacca finds a resemblance between 2008 and the illustrious 1978 vintage. The weather was a bit cool and rainy through spring until mid-July, and decidedly warm temperatures marked August, while September continued under favourable conditions of significant diurnal temperature differences. Now a decade old, the 2008 is just hitting its stride. Intensely perfumed scents of forest floor and dried wild flowers waft from the glass. The palate is mineral-driven with powdery tannins, giving plenty of texture and grip. This wine has the concentration to keep going, offering fantastic energy in a seamlessly knit package."

Wine Spectator

"There's purity to the cherry and raspberry fruit in this red, accented by floral and spice notes. Firmly structured, but remains graceful, lingering with fruit and spice on the aftertaste."

Kerin O'Keefe

94 points

"From the celebrated Montefico vineyard site, this opens with a floral fragrance of rose petal, blue flower and perfumed red berry. The delicious palate delivers layers of ripe black cherry, crushed raspberry, cinnamon and white pepper alongside firm tannins." —Kerin O'Keefe

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato, agnolotti with meat ragu, roasted poultry with truffle shavings, aged Castelmagno, mushroom risotto, or a hearty wild-mushroom tajarin. Long-cooked, savory plates that match its mineral structure and youthful Riserva tannins.

Tasting Profile

Bright red cherry and dark berry, dried rose, licorice, sweet tobacco and a defining limestone-mineral snap. Firm structured tannins, vibrant acidity, austere on entry and unfurling with air.
