Ovello sits at the northern end of Barbaresco, where higher clay content gives Produttori del Barbaresco a firmer, earthier, more structured cru, full-bodied with savory, meaty depth. The 2011 was a warm, ripe vintage, which fleshes Ovello out and tames its naturally firm tannins, making it one of the more approachable versions of this serious site. It's drinking well now with a decant. Produttori reserves these single-vineyard Riservas for the strongest years. Earthy, structured and satisfying.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello, from one of the coolest zones in Barbaresco, is superb. Here it is the wine's precision and energy - both hard to come by in 2011 - that really stand out. Pine, mint, chalk, bright red berries, blood orange and white pepper are some of the signatures in a brilliant, finely-cut Barbaresco that captures the best of both the vintage and this site. Don't miss it!" —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"This vineyard site seems to have absorbed much of the summer heat. The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a round and ripe wine with dark fruit, black cherry and black current. The Ovello vineyard expression is normally one of the lightest and more elegant wines in this Riserva series, but this is not the case in this vintage. There's more brawn and muscle than I remember in the past. In contrast, however, the mouthfeel is more streamlined and delineated than expected." —Monica Larner

Decanter

"To complete the vertical, Vacca's assistant, Luca Cravanzola, contributed the 2011 from his own personal collection. Vacca calls it a typical global warming year with temperatures reaching 34°C. Harvest was earlier than usual, starting the last week of September. At almost seven years old, this is showing hints of coffee and cocoa backed up by ripe sun-kissed strawberries. The palate, which demonstrates an overtly spicy character, is broad and firmly structured with some warming alcohol poking through. Underneath, minerality and uplifting acidity lend balance and intrigue."

Wine Spectator

93 points

"A peppery, spicy style, this displays cherry, eucalyptus, tar and black pepper aromas and flavors. Firmly tannic, yet with a core of concentrated sweet fruit, tobacco and tea accents on the lingering finish."

Kerin O'Keefe

93 points

"Perfumed with violet, fragrant ripe berry, leather, dark spice and a balsamic note, this is a textbook Nebbiolo. The elegant palate offers Morello cherry, cranberry, white pepper and star anise while firm but ultra-refined tannins provide support. It’s already delicious but has the structure to cellar for several years or more. Drink 2017–2026." —Kerin O'Keefe
