A mature Vintage Port from one of the Douro's most storied houses, now drinking in its sweet spot. Quinta do Noval declared 1994 as a Vintage year, the highest tier of Port, made only when the harvest justifies it, and bottled this in tiny quantities under then-new owner AXA to make a statement. After three decades it has shed its youthful grip and settled into a softer, more layered self, all dried dark fruit, spice and velvety sweetness. Sourced from a private collection, it's the kind of bottle made for slow evenings and good company. Decant off any sediment before serving.

"Excellent medium ruby. High-pitched, still-youthful aromas and flavors of black cherry, minerals, graphite, licorice, espresso and menthol. Primary, intense and impeccably balanced, with strong but harmonious acidity giving grip to the sappy dark fruit flavors and extending the extremely long finish. Wonderfully dense and silky wine--more elegantly styled than the 1996, thanks in part to the relatively cool summer. This should almost certainly merit an even higher score in a decade or so. Amazing wine in the making, and likely to merit an even higher score 10 or 20 years from now." —Stephen Tanzer

"The first vintage under the AXA Millesime regime, but predating Christian Seely’s tenure, the 1994 Quinta do Noval Vintage has a conservative bouquet that is quite earthy with hints of game and leather. It has moderate definition, but conservative, and is missing the exuberance of its Nacional counterpart. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity and powdery tannins. There are touches of black pepper and game interwoven into the black fruit, while later burnt toast and tobacco surface. But the Noval ’94 does not “fly” like the Nacional, and instead settles for being an improvement on its nadir during the 1980s rather than exploiting that great Douro vintage. This drank so well until a few years ago, but now it looks to be in decline. Drink now-2018. Tasted January 2014." —Neal Martin

"900 cases. Completely different colour from the earlier vintages – much deeper and bluer. Dark crimson with a very fine pale rim. Really intense and hidden and plump! Vigorous and spicy. Lots of sweetness and tannin. Not sure it's ethereal and delicate even if I suspect that's what Christian Seely is aiming for. But it does finish relatively dry. Kerpow!"
