Donovan Rall was just crowned Winemaker of the Year in Tim Atkin's 2025 South Africa Report — and his Syrah explains why. With viticulturist Rosa Kruger, Rall hunts down the Swartland's most singular old sites, and his "main" Syrah now draws from a rocky, schistous 10-hectare block once destined for the local co-op. Whole-bunch pressed, fermented with native yeasts, and aged nine months in concrete: no oak interference, no makeup, just schist-soil Syrah translated as cleanly as possible. The result is everything we love about Northern-Rhône-styled Swartland — blackberry and plum lifted by garrigue, spice, and the wild, slightly feral energy that defines this corner of the Cape. A benchmark for what new-wave South African red can be.

"The 2024 Syrah spends ten months in concrete with partially submerged cap, 100% whole bunch. This has an intense bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, pressed violet and crushed stone, very precise and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, powerful, burly even, assertive with graphite-tinged black fruit on the finish. This will need time to tame it." —Neal Martin

"The Rall 2024 Swartland Syrah draws inspiration from some of the world’s great Syrahs, embracing an almost raw character with slight green tannins and primary black fruit. Fermented with whole clusters and divided between submerged cap and pump-over methods, the wine ages for nine to 10 months to preserve vitality. It is muscular and contoured with broad shoulders and firm tannins that will benefit from additional time in bottle. Swartland’s warm days moderated by cooling evening breezes allow Syrah to achieve ripeness while retaining savory edge and structural backbone." —Monica Larner
