La Landonne is the iron-fist cru of Côte-Rôtie—no Viognier, no softness, just pure, old-vine Syrah from dark schist soils. And when Rene Rostaing makes it? You get power with polish, muscle with precision.

The 2022 vintage brings serious depth—smoked meat, black olive, cassis, and graphite all packed into a frame of firm tannins and electric acidity. But as always with Rostaing, there’s lift, too: floral notes, spice, and a sense of elegance that keeps the wine from ever feeling heavy.

This is a bottle built for the long haul. It’s the kind of Syrah that will evolve for decades, trading its youthful power for savory complexity and silky texture. One of the Northern Rhône’s grandest wines, made by one of its most consistent masters.

Rostaing inherited prize parcels in Cote Rotie from his father-in-law, Albert Dervieux, and uncle, Marius Gentaz. He went on to become a legend of his own. His son, Pierre, took over in 2015 and pushed the domaine in a more traditional direction. The high quality has gotten even higher.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 95
"The 2022 Côte-Rôtie La Landonne was fermented entirely with whole-clusters and is maturing in roughly 15% new oak. Orange blossom, raspberry, cranberry, violets, cedar and pencil shaving build into the structured, complex finish. Although showing well on this occasion, the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde appear to have a slight edge in 2022."

Decanter

D 95
"Remarkably soft on the palate for La Landonne, it doesn't have the same austere impact at this stage as a more classic vintage. Tannins are soft, ripe and not as intense as usual, but it does have length and ripe black fruit, with a graphite element to the tannins. Acidity is on the low side, as is the alcohol. From parcels planted at different times with an average age of 40 years."
