One of the first California producers to make hardcore Burgundy lovers sit up straight, Rhys chases elegance and terroir through mountain farming and low yields. Bearwallow is the estate's outlier: rather than the Santa Cruz Mountains, it sits in the cool northwest Deep End of Anderson Valley, planted on rocky slopes in one of the region's chilliest corners. The result is a Pinot with a different accent, generous and dark-fruited yet still energetic and detailed. This 2016 has settled into a fine drinking window. A great way to taste Rhys's farming philosophy applied to a different cool-climate terroir. Decant if young.

Kevin Harvey, a software entrepreneur with a Burgundy obsession, started Rhys in 2004 to prove California could make world-class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah from mountain vineyards. Seven estate vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains and Anderson Valley, all gravity-fed, foot-trodden, wild fermented by winemaker Jeff Brinkman. These are soil-driven wines—mineral, complex, serious. The kind of wines that make you forget you're drinking California.
