The literal birthplace of Rhys—35 backyard vines planted in 1995 that launched a winery dedicated to proving California can produce terroir-driven, age-worthy Pinot Noir. The Home Vineyard sits on the distinctive Whiskey Hill formation: decomposed sandstone with clay-loam topsoil creating earthy, layered complexity. Kevin Harvey's approach includes high whole-cluster percentages and foot-crushing for gentle handling. The 2014 shows mineral drive, bright acidity, and laser-like structure with outstanding grip—wines built for 20-30 year cellaring. At a decade old, this is entering its drinking window but will continue developing. For collectors seeking California Pinot with genuine aging potential, not over-extracted fruit.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2014 Pinot Noir Home Vineyard is one of the most polished, refined wines of the year at Rhys. Sweet floral notes and the 100% whole clusters give the 2014 its aromatic presence, salinity and overall nuance. Sweet red cherry, blood orange and white pepper add life through the mid palate and into the finish. Although the 2014 will be even better with bottle age, its grace and pure refinement are very much evident today. Although young, the 2014 has room to grow." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

91 points

"From a hillside site, the backwards, structured 2014 Pinot Noir Home Vineyard offers lots of minerality as well as notes of scrub brush, resinous herbs, spring flowers and assorted red and black fruits. It has serious tannin, yet also beautiful mid-palate depth, purity of fruit and length. Forget bottles for 4-5 years and enjoy over the following decade." —Jeb Dunnuck

More about Rhys Vineyards

Kevin Harvey, a software entrepreneur with a Burgundy obsession, started Rhys in 2004 to prove California could make world-class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah from mountain vineyards. Seven estate vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains and Anderson Valley, all gravity-fed, foot-trodden, wild fermented by winemaker Jeff Brinkman. These are soil-driven wines—mineral, complex, serious. The kind of wines that make you forget you're drinking California.
