Cabernet from the Monte Bello ridge itself, at 13.5% alcohol, from a producer that has held the line on restraint here for decades. Ridge's estate vineyards run along the Santa Cruz Mountains crest from 1,300 to 2,760 feet, on decomposing Franciscan greenstone and clay loam over fractured limestone, an unusual combination in California and the reason these wines lean structured and savory rather than plush. The 2008 followed a dry winter and produced a small crop picked between late September and late October: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with 20% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, destemmed with 40% of the berries left whole, fermented on native yeasts, pressed after six days, and aged twenty months in air-dried American oak. That American oak on Bordeaux varieties is a Ridge signature, and it reads as cedar and sweet spice rather than vanilla. At eighteen years this is mature but still firm. Decant it an hour ahead and drink it with something substantial.

"It is fascinating to revisit the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, here in its debut vintage. All things considered, the 2008 has held up nicely. There is good palate presence and vibrancy to the red-toned fruit and floral flavors. Since this wine was made, Ridge has achieved even greater richness and texture in the Estate. This gracious Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet will be at its best over the next few years. Cool weather towards the end of harvest left the 2008 with notable freshness. "A lovely Cabernet, dry and rich in flavor, showing lots of class. It's certainly ripe, with blackberry and cherry flavors that veer into currants. There's also a minerally tang. The wine is immature now, with hard tannins. Think of it as a junior version of Ridge's Montebello bottling, not as long lived, but still deserving of 6–8 years in a cool cellar."

Tasting Profile

Cassis and dried black cherry with cedar, sweet spice, tobacco, bay leaf and crushed stone. Medium- to full-bodied, firm but fine tannins, bright acidity and a long, savory, mineral finish. Dry.
