Nestled in the prestigious Paje vineyard of Barbaresco, Roagna’s 2019 is a wine that perfectly captures the essence of Nebbiolo from this renowned terroir. Known for its long aging potential and complex structure, Paje produces wines with a stunning combination of fruit, floral aromas, and earthy depth.

Opening with a bouquet of red fruit—cherry, raspberry, and subtle plum—the wine immediately invites you in with its bright, vibrant character. Delicate floral notes of rose and violet emerge, adding an elegant lift to the wine’s aromatic profile. Beneath the fruit and flowers, earthy tones of tobacco, leather, and a touch of truffle ground the wine and add layers of complexity. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with structured tannins that offer both power and grace. The acidity is fresh, giving the wine balance and supporting the rich fruit. The finish is long and mineral, with lingering notes of dark fruit and earthy spice.

Roagna’s Barbaresco Paje is a perfect pairing for hearty dishes such as roasted meats, wild game, or aged cheeses. While it is showing beautifully now, this Barbaresco has the structure and depth to age gracefully for years to come, revealing even more complexity with time. A true reflection of Paje’s terroir, this wine showcases the power and elegance that Barbaresco is known for, with the hallmark Roagna touch of balance and finesse.

Luca Roagna and his family have been making some of the greatest wines in Piemonte for generations, and the quality just keeps rising. Anyone will be able to respect and admire the work of Luca Roagna: no step taken in the vineyard or the winery is without complete follow-through of thought.

Standing in the middle of one of their vineyards, you almost forget it's a place to grow grapes. Grass, insects and wildlife flourish throughout the vines, which are never subjected to chemical sprays, mowing or tilling. The bio-sphere is diverse and vigorous, the soils healthy: the result is impeccably grown grapes ready to become impeccably made wine.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 96
"The 2019 Barbaresco Pajè is a step up from the first Barbarescos in this range. Its depth is apparent even from the color. Deeply pitched spice notes meld into a core of dark-toned fruit. Leather, incense, licorice and scorched earth follow, adding layers of dimension. This fabulous edition of the Pajè is notable for its textural resonance and overall presence." -Vinous

What importer Polaner Selections has to say about this wine...

Vineyard
Paje cru in Barbaresco. The parcel is Roagna's largest in Barbaresco, but is still only 1.83 hecatares.
Orientation
Southwest.
Soil
Pajé is particularly rich in calcareous marl soil with a high content of active limestone.
Viticulture
The vines that go into this wine range from 25 to 50 years old. All younger vines go into the Langhe Rosso. Older vines go into the Paje Vecchie Viti bottling.
Vinification
Fermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. They ferment with a pied de cuvee made from their indigenous yeasts. They then use the technique of submerged cap -- which can last 60-70 days.
Aging
The wine is then aged in large neutral French botti. The oak Luca uses is never toasted but instead made by using hot steam instead of flame. The wine is normally aged for five years in wood before release.
