Second wines from serious estates remain one of the few honest ways into classed-growth Bordeaux, and this is the second wine of Gruaud Larose, a Second Growth in Saint-Julien, from the very good 2019 vintage. That year was warm and dry, and Bordeaux handled it well: ripe fruit with the acidity and freshness intact, and Saint-Julien's gravel over clay held up against the drought better than most of the left bank. The blend is the classic Medoc mix, led by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot off the estate's Saint-Julien vineyards. 2019 was also the year Gruaud Larose began converting those vineyards to organic farming - a conversion that reached certification with the 2022 vintage - so this bottle comes from the first year of that shift rather than from certified fruit. At seven years old it is drinkable but far from finished: the tannins are still firm and the fruit still primary. Decant it an hour, or give it another five years.

"The 2019 Sarget de Gruaud-Larose has a well-defined bouquet with tertiary red berry fruit, understated initially but gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, quite tarry with a fair proportion of tobacco and black pepper on the finish. There is quite a lot going on in this wine and it should age well in bottle. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting." —Neal Martin

Perfect Pairings

Roast lamb with garlic, steak frites, duck confit, or a beef and mushroom pie. Aged Comte or a sharp cheddar also works.

Tasting Profile

Cassis and dark plum with cedar, tobacco and graphite. Medium to full-bodied and dry, with firm but polished tannins and good freshness cutting through. Long, savory finish. Still young.
