Frederic Savart made his name in Ecueil, deep in Pinot Noir country on the Montagne de Reims. Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is the other side of the Champagne coin entirely: a Grand Cru in the Cote des Blancs, a village of pure chalk and Chardonnay, and the source of some of the most austere and ageless wine in France. This Haute Couture bottling takes Savart there - 100% Chardonnay from the Grand Cru villages of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger - and his low-dosage, low-intervention hand on this chalk is a genuinely interesting proposition — this is a village that punishes anyone hoping to make it plush or easy. Expect the Mesnil signature: tightly wound and saline, cut with chalk, showing citrus and white flowers rather than obvious ripeness, with a finish that goes long and stays dry. 2021 was a cold, difficult, tiny-yielding year in Champagne, the kind that separates growers who farm from buyers who don't. Worth a decade of patience, or open it now with something raw from the sea.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2021 Extra-Brut Haute Couture Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is laced with tangerine peel, marzipan, orange jam, white flowers and lightly honeyed notes. The 2021 offers good depth and plenty of upfront appeal, but it comes across as a bit mature, especially in its aromatics. I would drink this sooner rather than later, as the finish is a bit short and there is nothing to be gained by waiting. The exotic, tropical profile will pair well at the dinner table. Dosage is 2 grams per liter." —Antonio Galloni

More about Savart

Champagne Frédéric Savart was founded in 2005 when Fred, age 23, left the cooperative and took a non-interventionist approach—stainless steel fermentation, barrel aging, low dosage. Just 4 hectares of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Écueil, Premier Cru of the Montagne de Reims. These are reference-point Champagnes for collectors seeking terroir-driven, small-production grower wine. The opposite of the corporate model. Serious stuff.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
