This is Brunello from Scarnacuoia, the slope just outside Montalcino where Ferruccio Biondi Santi planted his first Sangioveto vineyard in 1877 - the original terroir of the wine, and a corner of the appellation almost nobody bottles from today. Scopetone is tiny: just a few hectares, worked since 2009 by Antonio Brandi, a viticulturist, and Loredana Tanganelli, a beekeeper, on land that belonged to the late Federigo Abbarchi. The vines sit between 400 and 500 meters on silt, sandstone and limestone with volcanic influence drifting in from Monte Amiata, farmed certified organic since 2019, and the wine is made the old way, with long ferments and big neutral casks and nothing sanded down. What comes out is pale in color and enormous in perfume - bright, high-toned Sangiovese with a startling capacity to age, which is what Brunello was before it got big and dark. The 2019 was a long, even season, and this is a classic bottling that will reward a decade in the cellar; open it now and it needs a long decant.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Bistecca, pappardelle al cinghiale, roast guinea hen with herbs, or aged pecorino toscano. Its acidity is made for tomato-driven ragus.

Tasting Profile

Pale ruby, and far more perfumed than the color suggests: sour cherry, dried rose, orange peel, tobacco and earth. Medium-bodied, with fine chalky tannins and vivid acidity. Long, savory, mineral finish. Young.
