From the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr—the 'sundial' vineyard famous for its lush, elegant Rieslings—Selbach-Oster produces this 'Uralte Reben' (ultra-old vines) selection from vines planted around 1900. The Rotlay parcel in this vineyard is rich in iron ore, creating complex wines with stone-fruit character and surprising depth. This 2023 Spätlese Feinherb (off-dry) shows the vineyard's signature profile: cool, fresh with herbs and slate minerality on the nose, fruity sweetness of stone fruits and ripe apricots on the palate, with a mouthwatering finish featuring spice and subtle salt. At just one year old, the wine is already drinking beautifully and will mature gracefully for 10+ years. The 120-year-old vines produce wines of remarkable intensity.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 95
"The 2023 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese feinherb "Ur" Alte Reben comes from vines planted between 1908 and 1910, producing tiny, loose grapes. Subtle savor unites slate, herb and citrus in the gentlest fashion. The palate is juicy, fresh, lithe, smooth and aromatic with a lovely intensity of aroma, unobtrusive yet insistent, supported by a mouthfeel like a nano-particled phenolic veil. Its 12 g/L of sweetness comes across as dry due to proper acidity. Supremely elegant." -Anne Krebiehl MW

Robert Parker

RP 92
"From vines planted more than 100 years ago and whose grapes are picked slightly overripe (pink-colored), the 2023 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese feinherb "Ur-alte Reben" is clear and concentrated on the pure, intense and flinty nose that reveals ripe yellow fruit aromas. Ripe, lush and elegant, this is a well-concentrated and crystalline Riesling that is round, intense and still a little sharp. Bottled with 12 grams per liter of residual sugar. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork." -Stephan Reinhardt

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
