From a single cru in La Morra—one of Barolo's most prized communes—this wine carries the refined elegance that the village is known for. The Grasso family has grown grapes here since 1927, but it was Federico Grasso who began bottling under the family name in 1980, building a reputation for sophisticated Barolos that let fruit speak over oak. His approach uses large barrels rather than small barriques, keeping new wood under thirty percent even on single-vineyard bottlings. The 2005 vintage delivered a balanced, temperate season with alternating summer warmth and timely rainfall, producing wines of classical structure with ripe tannins and bright red fruit. After more than two decades, this Ciabot Manzoni has blossomed into a mature expression of Nebbiolo—red cherry, dried herbs, high-toned acidity, and spice notes that reward patience. Only two hundred and fifty cases were produced.

"The 2005 Barolo Ciabot Manzoni is certainly pleasing, although the new oak has never really integrated and remains quite prominent. At the same time, though, there is no question the wine has held up well. The classic Ciabot Manzoni notes - dark fruit, menthol, licorice and wild flowers - are nicely delineated. The overall impression is of a wine that is frozen in time. I suspect the 2005 will remain at its present, undeveloped state for a number of years, and then one day will suddenly be over the hill.
