A twenty-five-year-old Barolo from one of Piedmont's great classic vintages, from a La Morra cru that rarely surfaces with this much age on it. Giachini is a single hectare in the Annunziata district of La Morra - south-facing, on marl and sandstone, planted in 1975 - and the Grasso family have farmed this corner since 1927, bottling under their own name from the mid-1980s under Alessio Federico Grasso. La Morra is Barolo's perfume commune, and 2001 was the kind of firm, classically proportioned season that needed exactly this long to unwind. This is a back-vintage bottle from a private cellar; at this age the fruit has folded into dried rose, tar, truffle and leather, and the tannins have gone silky. Stand it upright for a day or two before opening, decant gently off the sediment, and let it unfold over the evening rather than rushing it.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2001 Barolo Giachini, a dark ruby, presents a complex nose of spices, menthol and minerals. Round and soft on the palate, it offers plenty of ripe red fruit and toasted oak flavors, with good length and terrific overall balance." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

92 points

"Aromas of blackberries with plums and dried fruits follow through to a full-bodied palate, with chewy tannins and a long, long finish. This is a wonderful single-vineyard wine from Silvio Grasso. Best after 2007. 250 cases made." (10/05). 90 Points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dark ruby 2001 Barolo Giachini presents a complex nose of spices, menthol and minerals. Round and soft on the palate, it offers plenty of ripe red fruit and toasted oak flavors, with good length and terrific overall balance."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, tajarin with butter and white truffle, agnolotti del plin, or aged Castelmagno. Keep it gentle - nothing too aggressively seasoned.

Tasting Profile

Fully mature Nebbiolo: dried rose, tar, truffle, leather and dried cherry. Medium to full-bodied, with resolved silky tannins and the bright acidity that keeps aged Barolo alive. Long and earthy.
