Nebbiolo grown on a beach — ancient Pliocene marine sands, once a sea floor, sitting over igneous rock at 290 to 350 meters in the hills above Biella. That sand is what makes Lessona different from Barolo: hyper-acidic soil (pH 4.5 to 5.5) loaded with iron, manganese and zinc, and it gives a Nebbiolo that's perfumed and lifted rather than muscular. Paolo De Marchi — better known for Isole e Olena in Chianti Classico — took over the family's eight hectares here in 1999 and set about reviving a region most of the wine world had written off, and his son Luca now works alongside him. Everything is hand-picked, sorted, fermented with native yeasts in open-topped wooden vats, then raised in large oval casks and held in the cellar for years before release. For anyone who loves Nebbiolo but balks at what the famous communes cost, this is the address.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast guinea fowl, mushroom risotto, agnolotti in butter and sage, braised rabbit with olives, or a plate of aged Toma and Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied and aromatic: dried red cherry, rose, crushed herbs and a savory iron note. High, bright acidity with fine, dusty tannins rather than heavy grip, and a long finish that turns saline and mineral.
