A land of snow-capped peaks, green valleys, impossibly perched castles and monasteries that have gone unchanged for a millennium: this is the Eisacktal of South Tyrol, and the Strasserhof, first mentioned in writing around 1100 AD, is one of its oldest wine farms. Hannes Baumgartner works about five hectares of light, sandy, gravelly soil between 680 and 750 meters, directly above the abbey at Novacella, in one of the northernmost growing areas in Italy. Kerner is a German crossing of Riesling with the red grape Trollinger, and the Eisacktal is where we think it does its best work anywhere: explosive aromatics with real structure underneath. The 2025 season ran mild and early here, with a cooler July that let aromas build slowly and a dry, hot stretch in early August that concentrated them, and the Eisacktal Kerner from the vintage shows aromatic elegance over a firmly acidic, mineral frame. Serve it cold but not ice-cold, and don't be afraid to keep a bottle for a few years.
