Taittinger remains one of the few major Champagne houses still owned and managed by the family whose name appears on the label. Pierre Taittinger, a cavalry officer stationed in Champagne during World War I, fell in love with the region and bought the house in 1932. After a brief sale in 2005, the family reclaimed ownership the following year; today great-grandchildren Vitalie and Clovis Taittinger run operations, with nearly 300 hectares of estate vineyards behind them — unusual self-sufficiency for a producer of this scale. Brut La Française showcases the house style: 40 percent Chardonnay (unusually high for a non-vintage Champagne), 35 percent Pinot Noir and 25 percent Meunier, drawn from at least 35 villages and aged close to four years on the lees, more than double the legal minimum. The half-bottle is the practical format here — two proper glasses, chilled in minutes, nothing left over. Serve well chilled as an aperitif or with oysters and lighter seafood.

More about Taittinger

Founded in 1734, Taittinger is one of the few remaining family-run Champagne houses, now run by great-grandchildren Vitalie and Clovis. Third-largest vineyard owner in Champagne, they plant 48% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Meunier. The Comtes de Champagne is all-Chardonnay magic.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
