Rocche di Castiglione from a cool, classic Barolo vintage, eighteen years on and just now hitting its stride. Vietti was the family estate that first championed Rocche as a single cru — Alfredo Currado began bottling it in 1961 — and the 2008 was made in the Currado family era, with his son Luca running the cellar, well before the 2016 Krause acquisition. Castiglione Falletto's sandstone-marl fruit has always been perfumed and structured, and 2008 played straight to that: a wet spring and slow start gave way to a fine September and October, producing Barolo of aromatic finesse, moderate alcohol and precise tannins rather than sheer power. This bottle came to us from a private cellar. Fully ready, and with room to keep going.

Tasting Profile

Dried rose, tar, red cherry, tobacco leaf and forest floor. Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity and a long savory finish. Mature but far from tired.
