Caprettone was only recognized as a distinct grape variety in 2014 — for generations it grew tangled up with Coda di Volpe on the slopes of Vesuvius and nearly everyone assumed the two were the same thing. They are not, and this varietal bottling makes the case. Villa Dora farms organically on the lower southern flank of the volcano at Terzigno, inside the national park, on ground that is essentially pulverized pumice, ash and lapilli; because phylloxera can't get a grip in that sand, every vine on the estate grows ungrafted on its own roots, trained to the traditional Vesuvian pergola. Vincenzo Ambrosio founded the estate in 1997 and his children run it today. Fermented and raised in stainless steel on its fine lees with no oak anywhere near it, this is volcanic white wine in its most unadorned form.
