The name is the legend: Lacryma Christi, the tears Christ is said to have wept over the Bay of Naples, which fell on the slopes of Vesuvius and grew into vines. Vigna del Vulcano is Villa Dora's white — 80% Caprettone with 20% Falanghina — and it's made deliberately bare, fermented in stainless steel with no oak and no malolactic conversion, so nothing softens or sweetens the volcanic edge. The estate is at Terzigno on the volcano's southern flank inside the national park, farmed organically on ash, pumice and lapilli, where the vines grow ungrafted on their own roots because phylloxera never took hold in that sand, trained to the old Vesuvian pergola. Vincenzo Ambrosio founded it in 1997 and his children run it now. Serve it very cold with anything that comes out of a Neapolitan kitchen.
