Fifty- to ninety-year-old vines on Kimmeridgian marl, worked by horse because there isn't enough soil for anything heavier. Melodie de Vieilles Vignes comes from La Rabotine, a slope in Vincent Gaudry's home village of Sury-en-Vaux where the topsoil runs only about thirty centimeters before it hits limestone bedrock — these are the terres blanches, the same Kimmeridgian formation that runs under Chablis. Gaudry was the first grower in Sancerre certified biodynamic by Demeter, in 2004, and this is the cuvee where that patience shows most: native-yeast fermentation, a single large used French oak foudre, no batonnage, eighteen months on the lees before bottling. Aromatically it's the most restrained of his Sancerres and texturally the deepest, built around a chalky mineral spine rather than around Sauvignon fruit. If your idea of Sancerre is grassy and simple, this is the bottle that resets it.

Tasting Profile

Restrained at first: lemon, orchard fruit and crushed stone rather than overt herbs. Medium-bodied and dry, with real depth of texture and a firm, chalky mineral backbone. High acidity and a long, saline finish.
