The Pérez-Villota family spent most of a century growing fruit for other people's labels — long-standing suppliers to CVNE through the mid-twentieth century, then co-founders of Viñedos del Contino in 1973 — and only began bottling under their own name in 2014. This white comes off Finca San Rafael in Laserna, in Rioja Alavesa, where three terraces slope gently down to the Ebro on iron-rich calcareous clay full of canto rodado, the rolled river stones the Ebro left behind, with vines planted between 1930 and 1990. It is 85% Viura with 11% Garnacha Blanca and small amounts of Malvasía and Tempranillo Blanco, fermented in stainless steel with the malolactic blocked to protect the acidity, then given six months in French barriques and puncheons (20% new) with weekly lees stirring. That puts it squarely in the serious, textured school of white Rioja — barrel-inflected rather than oaky, and much happier at the dinner table than as an aperitif. Considering what the family's other addresses fetch, it is a great deal of Rioja pedigree for the money.
